Emily,

Thank you for raising this important issue. You are absolutely correct that employers face significant risks with regard to workers compensation. And I wholeheartedly agree with you that they need to be well informed. Most States have an employer's association. These types of organizations provide training and consulting on a host of employer-related issues.

You can also find a lot of good information on Worker's Compensation online. Here is a link to an article written by Laura Littlecott, titled, "Do All You Can To Protect Yourself Against Worker's Comp Claims" with some very interesting statistics about Worker's Comp Claims and what you can do to avoid them:

If you want to discuss employees from Hell, lets talk workers comp. Not all employees, but more than 50% for sure. A lost time claim or catastrophic injury can easily put small businesses in financial ruins. I have seen it too many times. I don't think employers think about the possibility until it happens. Especially if the type of work is more sedentary in nature, but trust me, accidents still happen. Many employees then play the system and in Ohio, they win. Just think about how many injuries a company could have if they have employees lifting large trash cans approx 80 lbs all day every day, and the company has no type of transitional work lined up. Basically all those injured workers get to sit at home and collect money, which then increases the companies reserves and premiums. Employers should learn the ins and outs of each job and have a plan in place just in case. Will save then lots of money

In a future post, I will be discussing the use of hiring assessments to screen potential hires. Not all assessments are equal and there are legal issues with the inexpensive ones. But they can be money well invested when it comes to selecting the right person to begin with.

Ah... the other side of the proverbial coin. I have never understood why this side exists as most small business owners know that their employees are their greatest asset and their profits are tied to how well they shepard their flock.

Keep in mind that this article was written for the small business owner and not big business. Here is the difference. It is the shareholders that take the risk. In a small business, that is the owner. However, in big business, the CEO has a lot less at stake as what they own is a drop in the bucket compare to all other shareholders.

This article couldn't have appeared at a better time!!! I have been trying to run my small business myself- but it's inevitable that I will have to hire a couple people by this fall!! This article certainly opened my eyes on alot of things!

On the other hand, many employers pay their staff as little as they can and expect unpaid overtimg/

Do these figures include the millions paid to execs in perks and allowances, not to mention tax avoidance schemes?
