Now we're talking. Meat on the blog bones. No fluff here. Added a link to your website on my resources page.

In fact, on second thought, maybe some will under-appreciate the thoroughness since it could have them working extra hours during American Idol.

How sad is that? :)

Great article! The documentation requirements of the seemingly never ending paper-trail is growing particularly with email/new technologies. Ensuring critical communications and documentation are filed properly is becoming much more onerous for small business. For example, now that many deposits are made electronically, and many bank statements do not provide images of bank slips (as they do checks), ensuring those transactions are filed correctly is time-consuming. The well-organized, succinct list is exactly what I need!

Thanks for your advice. I am constantly benchmarking records retension requirements through my ten years of experience managing an engineering records center with multiple backup methodologies including disaster recovery. Really appreciate it.

Excellent article. I own a document scanning company, and would like to point out, that there is no reason whatsoever to keep your records in paper form. The IRS, unequivocally accepts scanned copies of your records just as if they were originals. If I can help anyone with questions concerning this, please let me know. It's a lot easier to keep 10 boxes on a DVD than it is to keep them in a warehouse. Further, you can dump copies of the DVD into a safe deposit box, a safe offsite and have a copy in the office for further record integrity.

Great article and very timely. I deal with a lot of records on a regular basis and I did not know some of the data in this column.
When in doubt retain especially if there is an opportunity for legal or accounting action.
