Creativity, vision, abstract problem solving, out of the box thinking, etc, have become nothing more than mantras and pathetic cliches.

At this most critical juncture in the state of American business affairs, we need, more than ever, visionary leaders.

Given the power of Executive Placement Consultants, they must accept some measure of responsibility for the quagmire and lack of innovation.

Thank you for such an excellent list. One important question: Do electronic copies/scanned documents qualify as documents for retention in the 3-7 year range?

Do electronically scanned documents qualify for items that should be kept indefinitely? For example: Annual Financial Statements, Board Minutes, etc? Thanks, Barb

Advertising costs a lot, consume a large part of new businesses' startup costs and existing small businesses' operating expenses -- but without advertising there will be no customers or continuing sales.Need more personal work to have success

Unless we are talking about a franchise, creativity is an essential ingredient to entrepreneurial success! I am not referring to the grand theory of creativity that brings out a ground shaking idea or innovation but "micro-creativity" that results in the ability to leap frog over the competition and build a sustainable competitive edge.

Taking the analogy of a restaurant, I knew of a friend who did copy the model of a well known lounge but then quickly realized that the demographics were different and had to adapt by using his creative faculties to come out with a very relevant product offering that ultimately took his business over the tipping point. The point I am trying to make is creativity is a process that is essential in improving all processes, strategies and capabilities and lack of the same may be a recipe for wallowing in the mud of mediocrity!

After taking too many risks and losing money ...I agree with Jim 100%. I'm all about "heads I win - tales I win" scenario. I no longer blindly (with passion ) run into an opportunity like I use too. I put much more thought into it. This should be the natural way the entrepreneur matures.

Small business advertising is a science and an art. Companies should adopt the fundamentals of advertising. Regardless of the size of the business an understanding of the laws of advertising can reap huge rewards. Successful business advertising speaks to one target market only. Focus the message to the target group. Successful business advertising does not sell a product or service. Create ads that generate interest and make the customer want more information.

This is Jim. I really appreciate your comments and glad to create some controversy. Will everyone agree that there are things you will do for free and things you will not? I have passion ONLY for things I will do for free. There is NO work, job, entrepreneurial endeavor I will do for free. I agree its nice when you really, really like your work. I really like my work. But it is work. I do not love it. I do not have passion for work. I feel sorry for those of you defending the idea that its ok to love a thing, job, or vocation. I have passion for people.
