Wow what an amazing post!!! Thank you for putting this together for the non savvy.

I have a question though, how do you select "update" to notify your fans? I assumed by sharing it, it would update (like it does on your friends walls) but apparently not. I would like to let people know when I update my blog. Actually I think I just figured it out. I feel a bit silly.. it is now very obvious. Just in case there are others out there as silly as me- underneath where you update on the LHS there are 3 selections. But it is automatically set for just your Fan page, (the middle button). Select your page and your fans pages to update everyone (the left button). Simple...

As Mike points out, a "Facebook Page" is created on top of a personal, account page. Once you have a Facebook account, you can set up as many FBPs as you want. People visiting those pages cannot see your personal page unless you make that page completely public - not a good idea.

FBPs are useful for businesses, as I stated in the article above, but I think that they can be useful for individuals, too. Especially if you are a blogger, consultant, or in some other role where you have a professional "following", you should certainly consider using FBPs in a fashion similar to how you might use Twitter.

Unless you are a celebrity, I don't see why an individual would need a Facebook "fan page". A regular Facebook account is probably enough.

A company does need a "fan page" rather than an account. But you cannot have a page without also having an account.

A few months ago, I would have said that the account should also be a company account to keep your private life private and only share with your friends.

However, recently Facebook has really beefed up their privacy settings and now you can divide your "friends" into groups and determine what each group can see. So it probably is no longer an important issue.

Mike - thank you for the tips and insights which are very helpful in understanding social media integration. Do you believe a Facebook page should be setup separately for a individual's business interests AND their own personal page or just setup one universal Facebook page for everything – a one stop solution?
