My definition of "Direct Marketing" is when you market directly to the consumer (i.e. telephone, email, mail, etc.). "Indirect Marketing" is like advertising.

I am not sure what you mean by "personal". But there is a major difference between marketing and selling. "Marketing" includes activities such as pricing, distribution (i.e. direct, indirect, wholesale, retail, private label, etc.) and promotion (i.e. advertising, sales promotion, branding, etc.). "Selling" is the use of the various works of marketing to secure the sale in various environments (i.e. face to face, online, catalogs, etc.).

Generally, marketing people know the difference between sales and marketing, sales people do not. Generally, marketing know they may not be a skilled salesperson, but most salespeople see themselves a skilled marketing people which usually is not the case in reality.

Having said this, I would also add that definitions are different in different countries.

Thanks Glen. I felt Tim's comment to my original post was so well written that I would do better posting his comment than writing a follow-up myself.

Very good article!

In particular, "know and communicate what you want to mean to your customers" was on target. Great branding can grab someones attention. It is the Brand that makes them connect in some meaningful way.

Individuals as well as organizations need to be clear about what they mean to their target clients. What Value they bring. What solution they provide. If an individual cannot grasp the meaning they bring, communicate it clearly and distinctly, they are floating around on the Sea of Ambiguity.

I really loved this post.
Its quite important to understand the brand value, the brand and build it appropriately.

I had read and worked on something similar some time ago and represented it as:

Absolutely Right!!! One needs to keep in mind what he/she/company/startup or whoever wants to be known as....once you have set your image right ...you will automatically find ways of communicating it .

Excellent article differentiating between Brand and Branding concepts. Most of the companies fail concentrating on brand and confusing between brand and branding.

Branding has allways been a problem for me to fully understand. This has helped to a point but its still can be so broad.
